Understanding Human Trafficking

Awareness is the first step toward prevention and restoration.

What Is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of labor or commercial sexual exploitation. It can affect women, men, and children, and it occurs in communities across the United States and around the world. Trafficking often operates in hidden ways, making awareness essential for prevention and intervention.

Trafficking is not limited to one location, economic group, or background. It can occur in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Understanding what it is—and what it is not—is the first step in recognizing when someone may be at risk.

Common Warning Signs

• Sudden changes in behavior, appearance, or social circles
• Fearful, anxious, or submissive demeanor
• Inconsistent or rehearsed stories about work or living situation
• Limited freedom of movement or communication
• Someone else speaking on their behalf or controlling interactions
• Lack of possession or control of personal identification documents
• Unexplained injuries or signs of physical abuse
• Working excessively long hours under unusual conditions
• Living in the same place as their employer
• Signs of malnourishment, poor hygiene, or untreated medical needs

What To Do If You Suspect Trafficking

If you believe someone may be at risk, take action carefully and responsibly.

• Do not confront a suspected trafficker directly.
• Do not attempt a rescue on your own.
• If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
• Contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline for guidance and reporting.
